A Unique, Participatory Vision of Restoration

What makes the D4R project unique is its integrated and participatory approach to landscape restoration in Madagascar.
This innovative research initiative brings together three major sub-projects:

1. Sub-project A – Evaluating Restoration Effectiveness

Led by the University of Zürich, this work assesses the real impact of restoration activities on the ground.

2. Sub-project B – Identifying Restoration Demand

Managed by ESSA Forêt, this phase focuses on understanding the needs and expectations of different stakeholders involved in restoration.

3. Sub-project C – Co-creating Demand-Oriented Restoration Projects

Co-led by DLC SAVA, ALA TSIMAREFO (Mada Resilient Forestry Association), TBSE, and INDRI, this sub-project develops restoration initiatives that directly address the identified needs.

Strategic Impact

Beyond these three pillars, the D4R project will produce recommendations on how to implement restoration at a national scale.
These recommendations will be discussed with government authorities, ensuring that policies and actions align with both scientific evidence and community needs.

This is a comprehensive approach, combining science and strategy, to address a crucial question:
